Welcome to my website!

I am a Lecturer (≈ Assistant Professor) in Economics at the University of Queensland (UQ) in Brisbane, Australia. I am also a Research Affiliate of the Tax and Transfer Policy Institute at the Australian National University. I obtained a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2014. My primary research interests are in political economy, development economics, public economics, and applied microeconometrics.
What's new?
  • In this paper, Ethan Kaplan, Jörg Spenkuch, and I find that in the immediate aftermath of natural disasters, the evening news substantially reduce their coverage of politics. Meanwhile, members of Congress become more likely to adopt the positions of special-interest donors as they vote.
  • In this paper, I look at how Japan's mixed-member electoral system generates time-varying de facto variation in political representation in the national parliament across space, which affects local public expenditure and electoral competition in the single-member districts. A new version and some slides are available.
  • In this paper, Youjin, Kanti, Hee-Seung and I look at how being a governing party constituency affect household consumption across and within constituencies in Bangladesh. Some slides are available too.
